What Is Cryolipolysis

Cryolipolysis was developed based on the premise that fat cells are more easily damaged by cooling than skin cells, as demonstrated by popsicle panniculitis.

The term ‘Cryolipolysis’ is derived from the Greek roots’ cryo’ meaning cold, ‘lipo’ meaning fat, and ‘lysis’ meaning dissolution or loosening.

Generally, the process is known as “CoolSculpting” or “fat freezing”.

How Cryolipolysis Works

Fat freezing technology was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2010. The method involves the controlled cooling of subcutaneous fat cells without damaging any surrounding tissue.

In this process, when subcutaneous fat is cooled below body temperature but above freezing, the fat undergoes controlled cell death followed by a local inflammatory response, localized panniculitis that gradually reduces fat in that area.

The degree of exposure to cooling causes controlled cell death (apoptosis). The dead fat cells are then naturally processed and eliminated by the body’s lymphatic system.

Cryolipolysis is effective on most areas of fat, including:

  • Upper and lower abdomen
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Chin area
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Flanks (love handles)
  • Under the buttocks
